The Olympic Division of Crown Pacific requested a report of observations and recommendations on erosion and sediment control practices for their Tree Farm near Forks, WA. Mike Harding, CPESC visited the site on March 11, 1999 and prepared a report that:
· Reviewed the current erosion and sediment control (EC/SC) practices being employed at the site
· Evaluated performance of EC/SC and practices as compared to industry standards
· Provided recommendations and guidance including enhancements and/or modifications to existing practices
· Identified additional practices and assisted with implementation through course instruction and field work
· Identified the potential for increased productivity, efficiency, cost reduction and/or performance
The report was organized into two sections: Current Practices and Area-Specific Recommendations. Companion documents included a Best Management Practices (BMP) Manual, Source Book, and a proposal for an erosion and sediment control short course.
As a result of the site review, Mike worked with Crown Pacific’s Resource Protection Forester Frank Silvernail to develop a two-day short course and field day. The event was held at the University of Washington’s Olympic Natural Resources Center in Forks, WA on June 10-11, 1999 and was attended by Crown Pacific staff, foresters from other peninsular timber companies as well as representatives of the US Forest Service and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.
Bruce Anderson and CSI Geosynthetics of Vancouver, WA provided the materials for the field day. Dwain Buck of Erosion Control Specialties was the contractor selected to demonstrate installation techniques and hydraulic mulching practices.
