1n 1998, Mike Harding was contacted by P.T. Fluor Daniel Indonesia to conduct an on-site assessment of their activities at the Batu Hijau Project on the island of Sumbawa in Indonesia. P.T. Fluor was the contractor responsible for building the infrastructure of roads and facilities for a large metals mining operation to be conducted by P.T. Newmont Nusa Tengarra.
Mike spent a week at the site in the company of P.T. Fluor and P.T, Newmont's field engineering staff. Activities during the inspection and action items delivered to the client following his field work included:
Site Evaluation Report:
Photo documentation of current practices; evaluation of their installation and performance compared to industry standards; recommendations and guidance for modifications and/or additions; identified areas for improving efficiency in reclamation operation.
Review of P.T. Fluor Revegetation Action Plan (RAP):
Provide input on current practices and make recommendations for changes or modifications where appropriate.
Best Management Practices Manual:
Provided a more up-to-date BMP Manual based on current practice; included specifications and construction guidelines.
Manual of Hydraulic Measures: Field manual for operators of hydraulic seeding/mulching equipment. Contained machine-specific guidelines for material quantities, mixing procedures, and application measures; standard specifications and coverage estimates per machine.
Training Course:
Proposal for a one-week classroom and field training course suitable for Kijang workers and also environmental staff. Course focused on installation practices, machinery operation and maintenance, inspection and performance expectations and remedial actions. Included course notes suitable for easy translation into Bahasa Indonesian.
Source Book:
Prepared a list of vendors for a full range of materials included in the BMP Manual to be used as part of standard practice at Batu Hijau. Where possible, at least three (3) sources for each material were provided.
